Dr. Chen Receives Prestigious Water Quality Award

Charlotte, NC – This week, Dr. Manjiang (MJ) Chen, PE, Assistant Engineering Manager with GAI Consultants, Inc., received the prestigious Gascoigne Wastewater Treatment Plant Operational Improvement Medal from the Water Environment Federation (WEF), an international not-for-profit technical and educational water quality organization. The award was presented during a ceremony at WEFTEC® 2013, the organization’s 86th Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference in Chicago, Ill.

The medal is awarded to the author(s) of an article that presents the solution of an important and complicated operational problem within a full-scale, operating wastewater treatment plant that is appropriately staffed. Dr. Chen is being recognized for the Bethune Point Wastewater Treatment Facility located in Daytona Beach, Fla. Her article, “Optimizing low-level nitrogen removal,” was published in WEF’s June 2012 issue of WE&T Magazine, and details how the Bethune Point Wastewater Treatment Facility applied her innovative approach to achieve total nitrogen (TN) effluent levels and meet NPDES permit requirements.

MJ acknowledged contributors to overall project success. “First, I would like to say thanks to Jay Thurrot and operators with the City of Daytona Beach. Without their support and hard work, the pilot study wouldn’t have been successful. Also, many thanks to Gary Johnson with Environmental Operation Solutions for his great help during the pilot test. Lastly, thanks to our GAI team for a team effort.”

Dr. MJ Chen, PE specializes in water and wastewater utility system inspection and valuation, preparing engineering reports in support of utility designs, permitting and certifications of utility constructions, open–surface drainage and pressurized conduit system calculations, surface water control structures flow ratings, and storm water management.

Dr. Chen earned her Doctorate in Civil Engineering (Environmental Engineering emphasis) at Clarkson University in New York, and is a registered PE in Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
