Partnering to Meet Design Schedule—PennDOT D11-0 Bridge Group No. 4

Three separate structures along Route 51 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania will soon be entirely replaced. When completed, motorists may not notice the changes, but the improvements are necessary to ensure the future integrity of this roadway.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 11-0 recently selected GAI Consultants (GAI) as the prime consultant to replace three separate structures along Route 51 in Allegheny County, PA. GAI, along with a team of five subconsultants, is simultaneously designing the replacement of these structures under a very demanding timeframe for this recently won project group.

Project Approach—PennDOT D11-0 Bridge Group No. 4

To take advantage of combined activities such as meetings, review, and public outreach, a unique approach will be taken to design all three structures at once. Allowing for effective management of professional resources and communication, this streamlined process will lead into the Pro-Team Meeting—a venue for the consultant team and client to decide which alternative will move forward in the design process.

Building the Team—PennDOT D11-0 Bridge Group No. 4

GAI will design two of the three structures and has teamed with a major subconsultant, Pennoni, who will perform roadway, structure, maintenance and protection of traffic, and other design tasks for the third structure. All three structures will advance concurrently to take advantage of combined reviews and meetings. The following four subconsultants will perform supplementary services:

For this project to be a success and accomplish its goals, a true design partnership must exist between GAI, PennDOT, all subconsultants, and the public.
