VIDEO: Awards for Veterans Expressway Widening Project

An innovative time and cost-saving approach to a project bringing faster, safer travel to drivers of Tampa’s Veterans Expressway earned GAI the Florida Transportation Builders Association (FTBA) Best In Construction Award for the design-build category and the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Florida region Merit Award in the transportation roadways category.

Watch Judson Fohr, PE describe the project’s challenges and the creative solutions that went into GAI’s contribution to an impactful project that boosts Veterans Expressway capacity by introducing express lanes into a highly urbanized section of a 20-mile roadway system.

About the Veterans Expressway Project

With the goal of facilitating nonstop travel along a highly developed route, the Veterans Expressway project involved widening Section 5 of the Veterans Expressway between Sugarwood Toll Plaza (Memorial Highway) and Van Dyke Road to complete the 20‑mile, 5-section express lanes system. GAI’s design also implemented all-electronic tolling throughout Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the corridor. Since opening in summer 2018, traffic capacity and mobility for residents and commuters in the metropolitan Tampa area have greatly increased.
