Donald Legg Memorial Bridge Six-Year Bridge Inspection Overview
Putnam County, WV
Under a 6-year agreement from 2020 through 2025 with the West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways (WVDOH), GAI is providing visual inspections (i.e., In-depth Routine, Routine, and Special) of the Donald Legg Memorial Bridge spanning the Kanawha River in Putnam County.
The 4-span structure—with three cantilevered through truss spans and one multi-girder span—has an overall length of 1,400 ft, and carries two 15-ft lanes of traffic in each direction. The inspections are being conducted using nighttime single-lane closings due to heavy traffic. In order to access various elements of the superstructure and substructure, the GAI team utilizes a man-lift, snooper, safety boat, ladders, and catwalks as well as rappelling and free-climbing techniques.
