I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) Milepost 149.5 to 155.5 Mainline Reconstruction

I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) Milepost 149.5 to 155.5 Mainline Reconstruction Overview

Bedford County, PA

GAI provided preliminary and final design for 6 miles of full-depth roadway widening and reconstruction along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, from MP 149.5 to MP 155.5 in Bedford County. The existing four-lane roadway is being widened to six 12-ft-wide lanes, with 12-ft outside shoulders and a 26-ft-wide median to alleviate congestion and provide substantial safety improvements. This $163 million project also includes 4 bridge replacements, 10 sound barrier walls, and 2 culvert extensions. GAI’s design eliminated two mainline and two overpass bridges by designing frontage roads for local travel, reducing construction and long-term maintenance costs.

Design challenges included tight areas that required the inclusion of two retaining walls to support the widened roadway, in addition to 22 stormwater management basins to meet Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) stormwater management criteria.

The project is ongoing; and GAI is developing a multi-phase traffic control plan that will allow four 12-ft travel lanes to be maintained throughout the anticipated construction duration.
