PennDOT Mifflin Road Stream Project

PennDOT Mifflin Road Stream Project Overview

Allegheny County, PA

GAI designed a stream daylighting project, including permitting and preparation of construction documents, for the unnamed tributary to Streets Run, which flows through a structurally deficient culvert below State Route 885 (SR 0885). Located parallel to SR 0885, approximately 950 feet of stream was created by daylighting the stream channel between two replacement culverts. To create a natural stream in a highly urban environment, the stream was designed using fluvial geomorphology and natural channel design. In addition, a series of step pools and a bankfull bench were designed to establish grade control, floodplain access, and instream habitat, ultimately increasing overall oxygen levels and micro-habitats for macroinvertebrates.
