National Engineering Firm Accepts Award for Emergency Superstructure Replacement Project
Indianapolis, IN—The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Indiana Section presented GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI) with the 2018 Engineering Excellence Honor Award for the Rockville Road over I-465 Emergency Superstructure Replacement Project.
Highlights/Key Facts
About the Award
- The award was presented to GAI on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at the ACEC Indiana Section Award Banquet Luncheon at the Marriott Indianapolis North.
- ACEC Indiana Section Grand Project and Honor Awards are also eligible for entry in the ACEC National Competition.
About the Project
- On January 10, 2017, a mobile car crusher destroyed the southernmost four prestressed concrete I-beams of the Rockville Road Bridge over the northbound lanes of I-465, bringing traffic to a halt.
- GAI worked with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Reith-Riley Construction to develop final bridge construction plans within five weeks of the incident, and produced a six-phase maintenance of traffic plan that minimized traffic and commerce disruptions on this heavily traveled corridor.
- INDOT’s emergency bridge design on-call contract allowed GAI and Reith-Riley Construction to collaborate efficiently and produce plans as needed, resulting in a two-month accelerated schedule.
- The bridge reopened on May 1, 2017—two months ahead of schedule and four months before initially predicted.
