City Staff, Project Team Mark Completion of Historic Yandes Street Reconstruction

Indianapolis, IN—GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI), a national engineering, planning, and environmental consulting firm with offices in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Fishers, and Vevay, IN, joined with the City of Franklin to announce the completion of the historic Yandes Street reconstruction in downtown Franklin, IN.

The $4.5 million Yandes Street reconstruction project was partially funded by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) utilizing federal funds.

“Our Yandes Street Project is a perfect example of collaboration,“ said City of Franklin Mayor Steve Barnett. “With a wish from residents to preserve their beautiful historic street, a desire to create the vision from people at GAI Consultants, an implementation plan from the team at Beaty Construction, and a lot of effort from City employees, this wish came true. We are so happy with the balance of historic charm, beautiful landscaping, and modern infrastructure in the finished product.”

The project involved the reconstruction of Yandes Street from East Jefferson Street to Ohio Street, and East Madison Street from Depot Street to Yandes Street. Both streets were existing brick streets in poor condition and were reconstructed with new brick-surfaced streets with barrier curbs, sidewalks on each side, a new storm sewer, and decorative lighting.

GAI Consultants provided design, topographic survey, environmental, permitting, utility coordination, and construction inspection services on the project.

“We made a commitment to Mayor Barnett, the city, and Franklin residents to help maintain the character of Yandes Street by replacing the street surface with brick, and we’re thrilled to have successfully fulfilled that commitment,” said Scott Hornsby, PE, GAI Vice President and Midwest Infrastructure Business Sector Leader.

GAI staff members joined Franklin Mayor Steve Barnett, city staff, representatives from the Indianapolis MPO, and area residents for a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 2, 2023, to mark the official reopening of Yandes Street.
