Orlando, FL—The Florida Transportation Builders’ Association (FTBA) presented its 2021 ‘Best in Construction’ award to two GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI) project teams in recognition of their work on Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Two’s Howell Drive Bridge Replacement project and Coastline Drive and Liberty Street Bridge Replacement Design-Build project, both in Duval County, FL.
“GAI was honored to accept Best in Construction awards from FTBA for both the Howell Drive and Coastline Drive projects,” said GAI Project Manager Andre Sutherland, PE. “Our effective teaming partnerships on this and many other projects enabled a smooth and efficient process from start to finish.”
GAI, in conjunction with Superior Construction Company SE, LLC, received an FTBA ‘Best in Construction’ award in the Bridge category for the FDOT District Two Howell Drive Bridge Replacement project. GAI provided construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services for the $11.8 million project, which involved replacement of the Howell Drive Bridge spanning the Ribault River. During construction, the project team was challenged with maintaining traffic—including two vehicle lanes, pedestrians who were largely school-aged walkers, and bicyclists—within a limited project area and throughout all phases. The new structure was completed in fall 2020. Andre Sutherland, PE served as GAI’s Senior Project Engineer alongside Project Administrators Kevin Lairsey and Dewayne Osteen.
GAI received an FTBA ‘Best in Construction’ award in the Local Agency Project (LAP) category for the FDOT District Two Coastline Drive and Liberty Street Bridge Replacement Design-Build project. GAI provided construction engineering and inspection services to the City of Jacksonville on this $24.7 million design-build project. This high-profile initiative involved the reconstruction of the Coastline Drive and Liberty Street bridges, along with a realignment of the Riverwalk, including demolition and removal of the parking deck behind the old Duval County Courthouse. Andre Sutherland, PE served as GAI’s Senior Project Engineer alongside Project Administrator Carl Padgett, Jr., EI.
The annual FTBA Best in Construction awards highlight companies and individuals who worked on innovative, complex, and impactful projects around the state. Greg Nettuno, PE, Vice President, accepted the awards on behalf of GAI during an event on August 6 in Orlando, FL.
