171st Street & Carey Road Roundabout Conversion Overview
City of Westfield, IN
City of Westfield, Indiana, within the existing stop-controlled intersection of Carey Road and 171st Street. Carey Road is a high-volume thoroughfare, and the City sought a cost-efficient solution to calm traffic at this increasingly busy intersection within an accelerated schedule. The GAI team worked closely with City staff and developed a compact, single-lane roundabout that did not require expanded right-of-way, kept existing utilities in place, and utilized existing drainage structures. The roundabout was constructed within the general footprint of the existing intersection, and included a central island, splitter islands, and minor pavement widening. Most of the pre-existing pavement was able to be reused by placing wedge and level to achieve the roundabout’s designed grades.
The City of Westfield “was elated with the performance and services performed by the GAI team.” GAI’s innovative design helped save more than $1 million in construction and right-of-way costs, and the project was delivered on an accelerated 9-month schedule—spanning from the design phase until the roundabout was opened to traffic. In total, GAI provided survey, roundabout and roadway and design, plan development, utility coordination, and bid and construction phase services.
