I-4 Beyond the Ultimate, Florida Department of Transportation District 5 Overview
Orange County, FL
As part of the I-4 “Beyond the Ultimate” project team, GAI Consultants worked with the Florida Department of Transportation District Five to deliver line and grade design for a Diverging Diamond Interchange at the Sand Lake Road/I-4 Interchange in Orange County, FL—the first project of its kind in Central Florida.
This 3.6-mile segment begins at SR 528 (Beachline Expressway) to west of Kirkman Road and involves widening the existing six-lane divided urban interstate to a 10-lane divided section, with two new express lanes in each direction. The project includes a systems interchange at SR 528 and a Diverging Diamond Interchange at Sand Lake Road. Additionally, a 44-foot-wide transit corridor will be located in the median from the western limits of the project to the SR 528 interchange. The project also involves the reconstruction of arterial roads parallel and connected to I-4 (Turkey Lake Road, Sand Lake Road, and Central Florida Parkway) to serve as traffic relief to interchange back-ups.
