Arlington Avenue/Churchman Bypass Roundabout Conversion

Arlington Avenue/Churchman Bypass Roundabout Conversion Overview

City of Beech Grove, IN

GAI designed this $1.5 million federally funded LPA project, located in the City of Beech Grove, Indiana, approximately 0.37 mile north of I-465 on Arlington Avenue at Churchman Bypass and Big Four Road. The new roundabout addresses safety and capacity issues related to increased traffic volumes at the Arlington Avenue and Churchman Bypass intersection. In the previous condition, the close proximity of the Arlington Avenue and Big Four Road intersection presented a safety problem, as queuing traffic from the signal at Churchman Bypass backed into the Big Four Road intersection, causing congestion. The new roundabout also features an accessible route for pedestrians and non-motorized traffic to safely traverse the area, which was lacking in the previous condition. The project was opened to traffic in 2020. GAI’s services included survey, right-of-way, roundabout and roadway design, plan development, utility coordination, and construction administration.
