Artist Walk Overview
Jacksonville, FL
GAI provided the master plan, landscape architecture, and civil engineering drawings for the new Artist’s Walk Park below the Fuller Warren Bridge in downtown Jacksonville. This project was completed as a special service related to GAI’s larger work on the structural engineering improvements to the actual bridge structure that spans the St. Johns River.
The first phase of the master plan is now built and currently provides a highly functional and popular public activity space supporting market, festival, and food truck types of gatherings. Recent events have ranged from a food and wine festival to yoga classes.
The plan’s signature feature is the new urban skatepark, designed in collaboration with California Skateparks. This includes quarter pipes, spines, snake runs, banks, hips, ledges, stairs, gaps, and funboxes to support all wheel types and skill levels. The design motif is a playful expression of the letters ‘JAX’ throughout the park, providing color and form through activity zones.
Lighting, selective landscaping, and connectivity to adjacent urban trails come together to make this new park a standout feature below the cathedral height of the dramatic bridge structure.
