SR 535 Interchange Improvements at I-4 & WB Express Lane Extension Design-Build Overview
Orange County, FL
GAI is the lead designer working with Lane Construction on this FDOT District Five project to reconfigure the I-4/SR 535 (Apopka-Vineland Road) interchange and extend the westbound express lanes from west of SR 536 (World Center Drive) to west of Daryl Carter Parkway in Orange County, Florida. This high-volume interchange and roadway provides access to Walt Disney World Resort, the Dr. Phillips/I-Drive tourist areas, and local attractions for both visitors and residents. The new configuration will enhance safety by alleviating traffic weaving at the intersection and congestion, while incorporating updated signage to better direct drivers. The project scope includes realigning the entrance ramp from I-4 westbound to SR 535 southbound; creating a new loop ramp from SR 535 northbound to I-4 westbound; lengthening the I-4 westbound exit ramp to SR 535; and other roadway resurfacing and auxiliary works.
GAI’s design utilizes Alternative Technical Concepts (ATCs) that have improved constructability, saved valuable tax dollars and accommodated major utility stakeholders such as Florida Gas Transmission and Orange County Utilities. The design for this project includes roadway milling and resurfacing, two new bridges, the widening of two bridges, 22,000+ lf of drainage facilities, 5 miles of median widening, and 100,000 sf of MSE walls—utilizing over 31,887 tons of asphalt and 400 lbs of steel. With completion expected in summer 2027, other design elements include signing and pavement markings, lighting, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS); construction is currently ongoing.
