SR 61 and SR 229 Intersection Improvements

SR 61 and SR 229 Intersection Improvements Overview

Bennington Township, OH

GAI is providing design services to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 6 for this safety improvement project that will convert the existing signalized intersection of SR 229 and SR 61 in Bennington Township, Morrow County, to a single lane roundabout. Both SR 229 and SR 61 are major collector roadways; the project intersection has been experiencing an increase in automobile and truck traffic volumes—along with an increase in vehicular accidents and injuries—due to residential and commercial growth in the area.

The new roundabout will naturally encourage safer travel by introducing fewer potential conflict points and slower traffic speeds. GAI’s cost-effective design minimizes land-use requirements within the existing tight right-of-way, while also minimizing impacts on utilities, residences, motorists, and the public. The project also includes widening the 24-ft span, non-composite box beam bridge carrying SR 61 over Bunker Run and replacing the corrugated metal arch structure located on SR 229. Additional work includes drainage improvements, new lighting, and signage. GAI designed the maintenance of traffic so SR 61 can remain open during construction, and the project is anticipated to be completed in spring 2027.
