Highlawn Elementary School

Highlawn Elementary School Overview

Cabell County, WV

GAI and its Community Solutions Group (CSG), as a subconsultant, provided design and engineering services for construction of the new Highlawn Elementary School in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. This approximately $14 million school project was prepared for the Cabell County Board of Education and the West Virginia School Board Authority. The Cabell County Board of Education saw the need to grow the school due to the expansion of the school district’s footprint and the aging existing building. GAI/CSG prepared the conceptual design and detailed construction documents for all site/civil elements of the site, utilizing every square foot of space within this tight urban block. Site amenities include an accessible playground using high-quality play turf and a collection of fully accessible equipment. The playground is designed to complement the angular architecture of the school building, and features a separate play area for Pre-K kindergarten and 2nd- to 5th-grade students to provide an age-friendly play experience. The separated parent drop-off loop, bus loading zone, and staff parking allow for a quick arrival and departure for all students and staff, while each of these areas are also tied into the site’s green infrastructure, featuring a underground stormwater detention area and a rain garden bio-retention zone.
