Pittsburgh, PA—The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Pittsburgh Section awarded GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI) the 2017 Sustainability Award for the Highland Avenue and East Liberty Boulevard Intersection Project. The ASCE Pittsburgh Sustainability Award honors regional projects that sustainably improve environmental, economic, and social conditions.

Highlights/Key Facts

About the Award

  • The award was presented to GAI on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at the ASCE Pittsburgh Section Engineers Week Award Banquet.
  • As the event’s keynote speaker, Chuck Beard, owner of the Abandoned Pittsburgh Gallery and Art Director for Pittsburgh Magazine, presented ongoing research into and exploration of 20-plus historic locations in the Pittsburgh area, including Carrie Furnace.

About the Project

  • The project initiated from the Pittsburgh Public School’s Obama Academy of International Studies and the overall School District’s desire to provide safer transit and bicycle/pedestrian options at the intersection for both students and the surrounding East Liberty community.
  • The project reduced the number of conflict points to improve safety, reclaimed green space, and updated bicycle lanes including Pittsburgh’s first implementation of two-stage left turn boxes for bicycles.
  • Completed in spring 2017, this redesign will ultimately improve the flow of all transportation modes at the intersection.
  • Working with the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, the GAI project team included Moore Design Associates, Santangelo and Lindsay, Inc., and Sci-Tek Consultants, Inc.

“GAI is honored to receive the 2017 ASCE Sustainability Award for the Highland Avenue and East Liberty Boulevard Intersection Project. An intersection may not come to mind when thinking about sustainability, but this project provides an excellent example of how transportation improvements can improve our quality of life without degrading the quantity, quality or the availability of natural, economic and social resources.”
