Orlando, FL—The American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida (ACEC-FL) presented the team of CONSOR Engineers, LLC and GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI) with a 2021 Outstanding Bridge Award for the Howell Drive/Ribault River Bridge project, located in Duval County, FL. Additional project team members included Terracon, Cardno, T2 Utility Engineers, APTIM, and Superior Construction Company SE, LLC.

About the Award

• The award was presented to the project team on May 27, 2021, during the ACEC-FL Transportation Conference at the Hyatt Regency Orlando.
• ACEC-FL recognizes outstanding member achievements in accomplishing Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) studies and projects annually.
• The ACEC-FL Outstanding Projects Awards Committee is composed of FDOT and ACEC-FL representatives who select a winner in each of seven categories.
• 27 projects were nominated to compete in the 2021 ACEC-FL Outstanding Projects Awards competition.

About the Project

• GAI provided construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services for this $11.8 million FDOT District Two project, which involved replacement of the Howell Drive Bridge spanning the Ribault River.
• The new structure, which was completed in fall 2020, consists of two 12-ft travel lanes, one 6-ft sidewalk, one 10-ft sidewalk, handrails, conventional street lightings, 5-ft wide shoulders and bicycle lanes.
• Specially designed barrier walls were constructed to separate pedestrians from vehicular traffic.
• During construction, the project team was challenged with maintaining traffic—including two vehicle lanes, pedestrians who were largely school-aged walkers, and bicyclists—within a limited project area and throughout all phases.
