Howell Drive over Ribault River Bridge Replacement Overview

GAI provided construction engineering and inspection services for the $11.8 million replacement of the Howell Drive Bridge spanning the Ribault River in Duval County, Florida.
The existing bridge, which was built in 1964, was rebuilt with two 12-ft travel lanes, one 6-ft sidewalk, one 10-ft sidewalk, handrails, and 5-ft wide shoulders striped for bicyclists. New barrier walls were also constructed to separate pedestrians from vehicular traffic.
The project scope involved relocation of 1,500 lf of bridge-mounted and open-trenched, direct buried 16-inch JEA force main; conventional street lighting; utility coordination/relocation; construction of a new 4-span, 480-ft bridge supported on 24-inch, prestressed concrete piles; subsoiling; construction of a column-supported embankment; drainage pond construction; rubble riprap; as well as other incidental construction. The new bridge is being maintained by the City of Jacksonville, and opened to traffic in September 2020.
