When previous efforts were unable to control a spreading culm bank/underground mine fire near a population center in Pennsylvania’s Northern Anthracite Field, GAI was engaged to conduct an extensive subsurface investigation that included downhole temperature monitoring and to develop plans and specifications for the construction of a series of deep isolation trenches in rock by blasting and excavation that successfully prevented further spread of the fire to surrounding communities.
