Bradford Dam No. 2 Rehabilitation

Bradford Dam No. 2 Rehabilitation Overview

McKean County, PA

Bradford Dam No. 2 is used as a water supply for the City of Bradford, Pennsylvania. The dam’s spillway was considered to be inadequate for a Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) event. GAI was contracted to develop alternatives to achieve compliance and design rehabilitation measures, prepare permit applications, prepare bid and construction documents, and monitor and certify construction.

GAI conducted a subsurface investigation for the dam, geotechnical engineering analyses, and hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to evaluate the stability of the existing Dam No. 2. Using these analyses, GAI designed rehabilitation measures to upgrade the dam to currently accepted standards.

The rehabilitation of the dam included installing roller compacted concrete (RCC) overtopping protection to provide dam stability during a PMF event. The energy dissipator for the spillway was extended to achieve compliance with its 100-year design flow, and water supply pipes from the reservoir were slip-lined to prevent leakage. Mitigation wetlands were installed at the downstream toe of the dam, and a public access road was constructed to allow access for fishing.
