East Central Regional Rail Trail Phases 4B and 5

East Central Regional Rail Trail Phases 4B and 5 Overview

Volusia County, FL

GAI was the Lead Designer of Phases 4B and 5 of the East Central Regional Rail Trail (ECRRT) project for Volusia County, which received a 2019 Design-Build Honor Award in the Transportation Roadways Category by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Florida Region. The ECRRT was built as part of the overall Shared-Use Nonmotorized (SUN) Trail System throughout the state of Florida. These segments of trail are part of the larger Coast-to-Coast Trail System, which will extend 250 miles from the Space Coast (Atlantic Ocean) to St. Petersburg (Gulf of Mexico).

Phases 4B and 5 of the ECRRT project involved design and construction of a 12-ft-wide asphalt shared-use path along the existing ECRRT corridor from Gobblers Lodge Road to Maytown Spur Road (Phase 4B), and from the Brevard County Line to Cow Creek (Phase 5), for a total length of about 19.74 miles. The project also included design and construction of two trailheads—one at Gobblers Lodge Road and one at Maytown Spur Road—with asphalt parking facilities and environmentally conscious bioswales for stormwater treatment. GAI also designed and oversaw construction of five pedestrian bridges that span environmentally sensitive wetlands and waterways along the trail, and range from 100 ft to 300 ft in length.

GAI’s design innovations eliminated 2,920 lf of bridge from the original concept, which reduced project costs and associated maintenance and contributed significantly to the project’s completion within an aggressive timeline and budget.
