I-95 Widening and I-4/US 92 Systems Interchange Reconstruction Design-Build

I-95 Widening and I-4/US 92 Systems Interchange Reconstruction Design-Build Overview

Volusia County, FL

GAI led the design team on this $206 million, safety/capacity project to widen I-95 from four lanes to six lanes north of SR 44 to north of US 92 (International Speedway Boulevard). The project also included reconstruction of the I-95 interchange connecting with I-4 and US 92. Encompassing more than 12 miles of roadway and 20 bridge replacements, this project facilitates safer vehicular movements for merging, exiting, and through traffic in this heavily traveled corridor.

Project components include the Spruce Creek bridges, the I-95 third lane south of Spruce Creek, and the I-4 eastbound ramp and bridge to I-95 northbound. GAI’s value-added design concepts eliminated 97% of the utility conflicts and 17 acres of right-of-way requirements. Polymer binder and bonded friction course were used to reduce future maintenance costs.

Work tasks included pavement widening, drainage systems improvements, bridge widening, bridge replacement, retaining walls, highway lighting, intelligent transportation system (ITS) modifications, median barriers, signing and pavement markings, signalization, milling, and resurfacing.
