Spotlight on GAI’s High-Volume Turnpike Interchange Improvement Projects

The oversight, input, and guidance of GAI’s Transportation Engineering design professionals are vital to help produce safe, high-quality projects that serve the public and meet regulatory requirements.

GAI’s Transportation design staff are skilled in delivering high-volume corridor and interchange projects for Departments of Transportation, Turnpike Authorities, and beyond. They work with clients, permitting agencies, contractors, utility agencies, and the public—working from concept to construction to enhance safety and traffic operations for all roadway users.

Here are some of the standout High-Volume Turnpike Interchange Improvement Projects GAI’s Transportation Engineering specialists have contributed to:

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Open End Agreement

Under an Open End Agreement, GAI is providing engineering design services for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. Projects have included concrete repairs to mainline corridors and associated interchange ramps; mainline bituminous resurfacing; slope repairs, drainage design, structural repairs, etc.

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Southern Beltway

GAI, as subconsultant, is providing construction engineering and inspection (CEI) and oversight on the $800 million Southern Beltway (SR 576) roadway construction project. GAI’s scope includes three mainline bridge structures, one overpass structure, and a 1,370-ft-long, five-span bridge.

I-4 and Florida’s Turnpike Mainline (Direct Connect) Design-Build

GAI provided design services for this $85 million “I-4 Direct Connect” design-build interchange improvement project. The centerpiece is a 2,000-ft, 13-span, prestressed concrete flyover ramp that provides direct connectivity between Florida’s Turnpike mainline (SR 91) to and from the I-4 (SR 400) Ultimate Express lanes.

SR 3020, Section 250, over Pennsylvania Turnpike (Freedom Road)

GAI completed a value engineering design for the replacement of a two-span bridge over the Pennsylvania Turnpike. GAI’s concept revisions provided an estimated savings of $550,000, compared to the as-designed structure.

SR 589, Veterans Expressway, Section 5, Widening Design-Build (Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise)

GAI designed this award-winning, $51 million Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) capacity improvement project—which received the 2019 Best in Construction Award from the Florida Transportation Builders’ Association (FTBA) and the Merit Award in the Transportation Roadways Category from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Florida region.

I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) Milepost 149.5 to 155.5 Mainline Reconstruction

GAI provided preliminary and final design for 6 miles of full-depth roadway widening and reconstruction along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. This $163 million project also includes four bridge replacements, 10 sound barrier walls, and two culvert extensions.

Atlantic Avenue to Boynton Beach Boulevard, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise

GAI led the design team on this design-build project to widen Florida’s Turnpike (SR 91) from 6 to 10 lanes. A major component of the project was the rework of the Boynton Beach Boulevard interchange to include additional ramps.
